Sizing
How To Size Your Custom Opening
To make things easier, we have created categories for pre-cut mats that fit most standard size artwork and frames (pre-cut single mats, pre-cut double mats), so you don't have to worry about it. Not all artwork is standard though. That is why we also have the option to make your own mat and input your own custom measurements. To make sure everything fits exactly how you need it, just follow the instructions below. If you have a tricky piece of artwork that you still aren't sure about, feel free to contact us anytime and we will help figure out what will work best.

Step 1. Measure your frame
First, you need to figure out what size mat to get. This is referred to as the "Outside Size" or "Mat Size". To find your mat size, measure the INSIDE of your frame FROM THE BACK where the glass/acrylic and matting will set it. In the photo example, we have a 5"x5" frame size. This means we need a 5"x5" mat.

Step 2. Measure your artwork
Next, measure your artwork. In this example, our photo is 4"x4". To get your opening size, you generally need to subtract 1/2" from your length and width. That is 3.5" x 3.5" which gives us a 1/4" overlap on each side to hold the photo securely in place. This can be adjusted up or down if you want more or less of the artwork to show. For example, subtracting a 1/4" gives an opening of 3.75"x3.75" and only 1/8" overlap on each side.

Step 3. Frame your art!
After your new mat arrives, you are ready to frame your photo. Line the photo up with your mat opening and tape. To prevent warps or buckling in the future, only tape the TOP edge of the photo. This may seem awkward, especially if your art has a curve to it, but once you assemble the frame, the backing will hold everything flat again. Hang on wall and enjoy your handiwork!
